Costa Rica Birding & Photography Season 2027

Serious birders and photographers do not pick a month and hope. They pick a species, then the month, then the site. This is our 2027 planner built the same way — the target subjects we are asked about most, when each one is realistic, and where we shoot it.

Resplendent quetzal — February to June 2027

Breeding season in the highland cloud forest is when quetzals are most predictable, because pairs return to the same nesting cavities and the males display. Outside that window they still exist but they wander, and a two-morning trip becomes a coin flip. Plan two mornings, not one. Our guests who allow a second attempt see the bird far more often than those who book a single sunrise and leave.

King vulture — year round, but the light changes

The Boca Tapada hide runs all year, which makes king vulture one of the few genuinely schedulable subjects in Costa Rica. What changes is the sky: dry-season mornings give harder contrast, green-season overcast gives clean even light on the white plumage and coloured wattles. If your priority is a portrait rather than an action frame, the wetter months are usually kinder.

Great green macaw — December to April 2027

Macaws concentrate around the almendro trees near Boca Tapada in the drier months, which is when flight shots at eye level are realistic. Later in the year they disperse across a much wider area. This is the single most time-sensitive target on the list. If a great green macaw is your reason for coming, do not schedule it for July.

Hummingbirds and multiflash work — any month

Controlled hummingbird setups do not depend on season, so they are the safest anchor for a trip built around weather risk. They are also the best use of an afternoon that rain has taken away from you. For multiflash sessions, bring a body you know well: you will be working with manual settings and a fixed frame for an hour or more.

Frogs, snakes and macro — May to October 2027

The wet months are macro months. Red-eyed tree frogs call after rain, glass frogs appear along streams, and the night walks around La Fortuna are at their most productive between May and October. Combine a night walk with a morning birding walk on the same 24 hours and you cover two completely different subject sets without moving hotels.

Building a 2027 photography week that actually works

A structure we run often: three nights in La Fortuna for birding, night macro and hummingbirds, then two nights in Boca Tapada for the king vulture hide, macaws and river work. Add a highland extension in February to June if quetzal is on the list. Every photography session runs private by default, because a group of eight cannot share one hide window or one flash setup without ruining both.

    When to reserve for 2027

Hides and specialist photography sessions have a fixed number of positions and one guide, so December-to-April dates should be held 4 to 6 months out. Green-season dates are usually comfortable at 2 to 3 months. We do not ask for payment to check availability. Send the species list and the dates, we confirm with the reserve, and you get a written plan before any payment link.

    Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to photograph a resplendent quetzal in 2027?

February to June, during highland breeding season, when pairs return to fixed nesting cavities and males display. Allow two mornings rather than one.

Can I photograph the king vulture all year in Costa Rica?

Yes. The Boca Tapada hide operates year round; the wetter months give softer, more even light for portraits, the dry months give harder contrast.

When are great green macaws easiest to photograph?

December through April, when they concentrate around the almendro trees near Boca Tapada. Later in the year they disperse across a much wider range.

Which months are best for frog and macro photography?

May to October. Amphibian activity peaks with the rain, so night walks around La Fortuna are far more productive in the wet season.

    Are photography sessions private?

Yes, by default. A hide window or a multiflash setup cannot be shared by a large group without compromising everyone's results.

Send us your target species and your 2027 travel window — we will tell you honestly which are realistic in that month and build the itinerary around the ones that are.
