Most rainy-season days follow a predictable rhythm: clear or partly cloudy mornings (5 AM – 12 PM), building clouds after lunch, and short but intense downpours between 2 PM and 5 PM. Evenings often clear again. That means morning tours — sloth walks, hanging bridges, safari float — are almost always dry, and night tours (after 5:30 PM) are usually fine.
Best Tours When It's Wet
Some experiences are actually BETTER in the rain: the Peñas Blancas Safari Float becomes a wildlife highway (herons, sloths, monkeys drinking at the riverbank), Bogarín Trail sees more sloth activity and the frogs come out mid-morning, and hot springs (Baldi, Tabacón, Paradise) are unbeatable during a warm tropical downpour.

Volcano viewpoints (Arenal 1968, Observatory) can be socked in with clouds for 2–3 days at a time in September/October. If volcano views are critical, plan them for the first clear morning and keep flexibility in your itinerary.
