The experience
Balsa River White Water Rafting – Class III & IV
The upper section of the Río Balsa is the strongest whitewater in the immediate La Fortuna area — 2 hours of near-continuous Class III and III+ / IV rapids in a compact, high-quality run that keeps the adrenaline going from the first drop to the last. Compared with the wild, remote Sarapiquí, the upper Balsa is more predictable and closer to town, which makes it the sweet spot for adventurous teens (13+), active adults and travelers who want a serious rafting experience without the 4-hour round trip to the Caribbean slope. Expect tight technical lines through boulder gardens, wave trains, punchier drops and a few standing holes; guides work the raft actively and give real paddle commands rather than scenic-float narration. Certified bilingual river guides run a full pre-launch briefing on safety, paddle technique and swim positioning, and a safety kayaker shadows the group. The stretch runs through primary and secondary rainforest at the base of the Arenal Volcano, with realistic chances of toucans, kingfishers, iguanas and howler monkeys along the shore. Includes all equipment (helmet, PFD, paddle) and a traditional Costa Rican lunch (casado) at the private riverside restaurant. Transport is not included — we quote it separately by hotel and zone. Available as shared or fully private departures.
