Caño Negro Wildlife Tour

Discover one of Costa Rica's most important wetland ecosystems on a relaxed, family-friendly boat safari through the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge — a RAMSAR-designated site of international importance located near the Nicaraguan border. Typical day: 7:30 AM pickup at your La Fortuna hotel → arrive at the Río Frío boat dock around 9:00–9:30 AM → 2.5–3 hours navigating the lagoons, flooded forest and river channels with a bilingual naturalist guide and professional spotting scope → typical Costa Rican lunch at ~12:30–1:30 PM → return drive to La Fortuna arriving 4:30–5:00 PM depending on your hotel. Expect howler and spider monkeys, three species of caiman, sloths, iguanas, basilisks, river turtles, and a birding bonanza — roseate spoonbills, anhingas, wood storks, jabiru, ringed and Amazon kingfishers, boat-billed and bare-throated tiger herons and, in the dry season, Nicaraguan grackles and Northern jacanas. Wildlife density peaks December–April; the green season (May–November) brings lush landscapes and migratory activity. Included: bilingual naturalist guide, park fees, lunch, bottled water and fresh tropical fruit onboard. Transport is not included — we quote it separately by hotel and zone.
