The experience
La Fortuna Waterfall Visit — Self-Guided
Self-guided visit to La Fortuna Waterfall — one of Costa Rica's most iconic natural landmarks and a must-see when staying in the Arenal region. The 70-meter (230 ft) waterfall drops from the Chato Volcano into a lush canyon of primary tropical rainforest inside a community-managed reserve. Your ticket includes park entrance only (no guide, no transport). From the visitor center you descend 500+ well-maintained concrete stairs (about 15–25 minutes down, 30–45 minutes back up) through canopy shaded by giant ceibas and cecropias, where toucans, oropendolas, blue morpho butterflies and occasionally sloths and coatis appear. At the base you can photograph the falls, wade or swim in the pools when conditions and park operations allow, and continue a short distance downriver to calmer swimming holes. The park has restrooms, changing areas, a small restaurant, and mirador viewpoints. Bring water, closed shoes with grip, swimwear, a towel and a dry bag for cameras. Best visited early morning (7–9 AM) for softer light, fewer crowds and cooler climb-back conditions. Fitness matters: the ascent is steep but doable at your own pace with rest benches along the way. If you prefer full-service, we can add private door-to-door transport from any La Fortuna hotel or a guided combo with Bogarín Trail or Arenal 1968.

Questions
Frequently asked
How long does this tour last?
It lasts 2–3 hours. Start times: any time between 7:00am and 4:00pm (last entry 4:00pm).
Is transport or pickup included?
Transport is never included in the tour price. We quote it separately by hotel and zone so you only pay for the route you actually need.
How many steps are there?
About 500 steps down to the base and the same back up. Take it slowly; there are landings to rest. Not recommended for knee or heart conditions.
Can we swim?
Yes, when the river level allows it. Bring a swimsuit, towel and water shoes; the current near the falls is strong.
What happens if it rains?
Rain is part of the rainforest and the tour normally runs; we bring rain gear. If conditions become unsafe, we reschedule or refund according to our policy.
