    La Fortuna has three legitimate night-tour options and a lot of misleading marketing.     Ecocentro Danaus — The Frog Reserve

    The undisputed leader for red-eyed tree frogs, glass frogs, and eyelash vipers. Highest sighting rate in the region (95%+ for red-eyed frogs). Flat, wide, well-lit boardwalk trails — easiest for older guests and kids. Two departures: 5:30 PM (better for families) and 8:00 PM (better for photographers). $55 shared group / $115 private per adult (kids 5–11 pay 70%).

    Papa's Place — The Local Farm

    Smaller, family-run reserve on a working farm. Feels wilder and more personal — often you'll be one of only 4–8 people on the trail. Excellent for red-eyed frogs, katydids, and snakes (fer-de-lance, eyelash viper, cat-eyed snake). Slightly more uneven terrain than Danaus. Two departures: 5:30 PM and 8:00 PM. $55 shared group / $115 private per adult.

    Mistico Hanging Bridges — The Canopy Night Walk

    A completely different experience — you walk the hanging bridges at night, at canopy level. Fewer frogs than Danaus/Papa's (you're higher up, in different habitat) but far more sleeping birds, kinkajous, olingos, and the chance for owls. Best for guests who did Mistico in the daytime and want a totally different perspective. Longer walk (3 km), moderate stairs.

    If You Only Do ONE Night Tour

    Book Ecocentro Danaus at 5:30 PM. It has the highest wildlife hit rate, the flattest trails, the best guide-to-guest ratio, and is the most reliable "wow" for first-time visitors. If you're a serious photographer, take the 8:00 PM slot instead — fewer people, more mature frog activity, better composition light.

    If You Have TWO Nights

    Night 1: Ecocentro Danaus 5:30 PM (families/first-timers) or 8:00 PM (photographers). Night 2: Papa's Place — different habitat, different guide style, different species mix. You will not see the same tour twice.

    Photographer's Notes

    All three tours allow photography, but Danaus and Papa's are the productive ones for macro. Bring a single flash with a large diffuser (see our macro guide). Ask for a specialist photography guide when booking — the difference in composition assistance is enormous. Tripods are optional; most macro is handheld with flash.

    What About "Free" Night Tours From Your Hotel?

    Skip them. They are typically 45-minute walks around a hotel garden with a flashlight — you will see almost nothing except an occasional cane toad. A proper reserve tour with a naturalist and a red-light approach is 10× the experience for the price of a nice dinner.
