The experience
Mistico Hanging Bridges Park sits on 250 hectares of protected primary rainforest near La Fortuna, at the edge of the Arenal Volcano area. The park's trail system covers 3.2 km in a loop and crosses 16 bridges — 6 of them suspension bridges that reach up to 45 meters (148 feet) above the forest floor. Walking above the canopy level puts you eye-to-eye with wildlife that most visitors never see from the ground: toucans landing on branches at arm's length, sloths sleeping between cecropia leaves, and mixed flocks of tanagers moving through the treetops.
The 6 hanging bridges are the highlight. Each one offers a different perspective — the longest stretches 97 meters across a canyon, while the tallest rises 45 meters above the understory. Morning mist sometimes fills the lower canopy from the suspension points, creating one of the most photographed views in Arenal. The 10 fixed bridges connect the trail through the forest interior, where light filters differently and ground-level species — coatis, agoutis, eyelash pit vipers — are more commonly found.
Wildlife you can realistically expect with a private naturalist guide includes: Three-toed Sloths (Bradypus variegatus) and Two-toed Sloths (Choloepus hoffmanni) resting in the canopy; Mantled Howler Monkeys (Alouatta palliata) and White-faced Capuchins (Cebus imitator) moving through the upper story; Keel-billed Toucans (Ramphastos sulfuratus), Rufous Motmots (Baryphthengus martii), Blue-gray Tanagers and Passerini's Tanagers; Blue Morpho butterflies (Morpho peleides) along the trail; and occasionally Eyelash Pit Vipers (Bothriechis schlegelii) sleeping coiled on heliconia bracts. Over 350 bird species have been recorded in the park.

Mistico Park is approximately 25 minutes from La Fortuna town center by car. Take Route 142 west toward Lake Arenal — the park entrance is on the right just past the dam, up a paved access road. VIVO can add round-trip hotel pickup as a separate, clearly priced service, so you do not need to arrange your own transport or worry about directions.
Mistico Park opens daily at 6:00 AM. Last entry is at 3:50 PM. Early morning (6:00–9:00 AM) is the best time to visit: temperatures are lower, the forest is quieter, wildlife is most active, and you will avoid the groups that arrive from Guanacaste resorts mid-morning. VIVO tours depart at 7:00 AM for the morning session.
Closed-toe shoes with good grip are mandatory — the trail can be slippery, especially in the rainy season (May–November). Light, breathable clothing works best. Bring a light rain jacket: the rainforest creates its own microclimate and rain can appear without warning at any time of year. Insect repellent, sunscreen for the bridge viewpoints, a water bottle, and a camera with a zoom lens for canopy wildlife.

Elias was wonderful in helping us plan out our trip, excursions, hikes, restaurants, drive times and routes.
