Pickup at LIR: how it works

LIR arrivals empty into a single open-air walkway. Your driver waits at the end of it with a name sign — there is genuinely nowhere to get lost. From wheels down to sitting in the vehicle is usually 30–40 minutes including immigration and bags, versus 45–70 at SJO. Give us your flight number at booking and we monitor it. Delays are not charged.

The LIR → La Fortuna drive, described honestly

Three hours through Guanacaste cattle country, past Cañas and around the north side of Lake Arenal. The last hour along the lake is one of the prettiest stretches of road in the country, with the volcano appearing across the water on clear days. All paved. Popular stops: the Cañas viewpoints, the lakeside restaurants at Nuevo Arenal, and the artisan bakeries on the Tilarán road. Short stops are included in the rate.

Flying in and out of different airports

This is the trick most travellers miss. Open-jaw tickets — LIR in, SJO out, or the reverse — are usually the same price and save you an entire backtracking day. The cleanest northern loop: land at LIR, two nights Guanacaste beach, transfer to La Fortuna for three nights of volcano and wildlife, then continue south and fly out of SJO. No stretch is longer than three hours and you never repeat a road.

What to do the day you arrive in Arenal from LIR

A morning LIR landing puts you in La Fortuna by early afternoon, which is enough for a half-day. Mistico hanging bridges runs well in the afternoon and the light through the cloud is better than at midday. If you land in the evening, keep the arrival day free and start with the 1968 lava trail or Arenal Observatory birding the next morning.
