If your flight lands after 9:00 PM, an alternative many travellers prefer is one night near Alajuela (15 minutes from SJO) and a fresh morning drive to Arenal — you arrive by 11 AM and keep the whole first day.

Luggage, car seats and surfboards

A sedan comfortably fits 4 adults with 4 large suitcases, or 6 adults with carry-on-sized bags. If you are 5–6 people with full luggage, book the van.
